LOGANVILLE – Short-handed Harrison was no match for Grayson on Tuesday in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs. Down both of their All-Region 3AAAAAA selections in Sloan Vick and Harper Smith to start the game, and without Hope Mitchell by the end of the first quarter, the Rams romped the Hoyas 76-31 to advance to the second round. With the win, the Rams (27-1) will host the winner of Parkview and Lambert in the Sweet 16 later this week.

POWDER SPRINGS -- The Hillgrove girls basketball team has warm-up shirts which have the motto "Locked in" on the back. That's exactly what the Hawks were Tuesday night against South Gwinnett in the opening round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. Hillgrove opened the game on a 16-1 run over the first five minutes and rolled to a 71-44 victory. The win means the Hawks (21-7) will play Brookwood in the second round on Friday.

North Cobb’s Ronan An and Osborne’s Sandra DeSouza came home as state champions after winning titles at the state wrestling tournament held at the Macon Coliseum over the weekend. An completed an undefeated season finishing 54-0 by pinning his first three opponents and then beating Buford’s Conor McCloskey by a 6-1 decision in the Class AAAAAA 215-pound championship match.

MARIETTA – The Kell girls basketball team used a dominant defensive performance to capture a 75-31 win over Blessed Trinity in the Region 6AAAA championship game Thursday at Kell High School. Blessed Trinity (8-15) led for the final time early in the first quarter when Naomi Ritzmann made a layup to give the Titans a 5-3 advantage. Kell’s (21-5) offense kicked into gear shortly after, ending the opening frame on a 9-2 run to take a 12-5 lead into the second quarter.

SMYRNA -- Pebblebrook used a big first quarter to take control of the game and defeat Harrison 63-53 in the semifinals of the Region 3AAAAAA boys basketball tournament at Campbell High School on Thursday. The Falcons needed the strong 23-9 start to hold off the Hoyas as Harrison outscored Pebblebrook 48-44 the rest of the way. Pebblebrook advanced to Friday's region championship game where they will take on the winner of McEachern and Hillgrove.

Jeff Hollis, the winningest coach in Wheeler High School's football history, died on Feb. 3. He was 81 years old. Hollis led the Wildcats to four region titles during a tenure from 1985-94 that included seven straight seasons of double-digit victories from 1987-1993. During that time, Wheeler went 84-33 and advanced to the state quarterfinals on four different occasions. "He was one who was not necessarily coaching the game.

The Whitefield Academy boys finished fourth in the Class A-AAA swimming state championships over the weekend at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center. Greater Atlanta Christian won the team title with 286 points. Whitefield finished with 181 points, with Mount Paran Christian eighth (168) and North Cobb Christian 17th (69). Whitefield was paced by the first-place 200-yard relay team of Jackson Brooks, Kye Marrero, Stanton Swygart and William Boyer, who won with a time of 1 minute, 40.36 seconds.

When Hunter Nourzad was playing football at Marietta's Walker School, he could not have imagined he would one day be trying to help the Kansas City Chiefs make history. On Sunday, Nourzad's Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at New Orleans' Caesars Superdome. If Kansas City wins, it would become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, and Nourzad knows what that would mean for the Kansas City area.
