    Polls open at 7 a.m. March 25 for two special elections in Charleston County. Mount Pleasant will elect one new face to Town Council, choosing from nine candidates to fill a vacancy on the nine-member body. Voters in House District 113, which encompasses most of North Charleston, will choose a new Statehouse representative. Only one candidate is on the ballot for that seat.

    Charleston attorney Gedney Main Howe III, one of the lions of the South Carolina legal community known for taking on profile cases while at the same time spending hours mentoring young lawyers, passed away March 21. He was 78. His son, Gedney M. Howe IV, recently posted on social media that his father had developed pneumonia, which was severely complicated by his existing Pulmonary Fibrosis and Parkinson’s Disease.

    The Charleston County Democratic Party has apologized to Republican County Councilman Brantley Moody for falsely accusing him of storming into their headquarters and berating its volunteers over stolen candidate yard signs. Moody has always maintained his innocence, saying the accusation was a case of mistaken identity that maligned his character. The apology means his defamation lawsuit against the Democrats is being withdrawn.

    The Citadel will host a special parade and panel discussion Feb. 28 to honor Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Hugh Reavis Nelson Jr., the first full-term graduate of the school to be awarded the nation's highest honor for battlefield bravery. Nelson, Class of 1959, was posthumously awarded the medal Jan. 3 by President Joe Biden in a White House ceremony attended by his family.

    U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, an ally of both President Donald Trump and Ukraine in its war with Russia, is signaling Trump's approach to ending the conflict represents the best path. "If history has taught us anything it’s that appeasing aggression gets you more aggression," Graham, R-S.C., said on X, formerly known as Twitter,  Feb. 19. "That was Chamberlain to Hitler and Biden and Obama to Putin," he added.
