For the first time in roughly 140 years, people could be behind bars at Ashcroft again in the near future if Aspen Historical Society achieves one of its priorities. The historical society wants to relocate the Ashcroft jail building from its obscure site west of Castle Creek Road to a site within the ghost town on the east side of the road, according to AHS President and CEO Kelly Murphy. The wooden structure is rotting at its current site.

An Aspen-based citizens’ group will start collecting signatures this weekend to force a Nov. 5 ballot question which, if approved, would amend the Pitkin County Home Rule Charter to require a vote before the airport runway could be relocated or expanded. The group Citizens Against Bigger Planes received approval Monday for the form of its proposed petition and ballot language by the Pitkin County Clerk’s Office.

Feedback from the Federal Aviation Administration that led Pitkin County commissioners to conclude they have “no wiggle room” on an airport improvement plan has reinforced a citizens’ group’s view that the county is falling for a “trap.”Amory Lovins, president of Aspen Fly Right, maintained Wednesday that Pitkin County can proceed with a specially tailored plan to rebuild the runway and pursue other improvements without relying on the feds for money.

A plea deal is in the works for at least one of the defendants charged with suspicion of tampering with a deceased human body in a case involving a death earlier this year at Lake Christine outside of Basalt, according to a court hearing on Tuesday. Prosecutor Andrea Middleton of the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office asked a judge for a continuance in the case of Nelson Mauricio Clara-Garay, 30, of El Jebel, so she could get plea agreement paperwork to his attorney.
