    The Australian Securities and Investments Commission took enforcement action against fewer auditors during the 2023-24 financial year, but don’t automatically hold that against the corporate regulator. ASIC’s latest annual report says that the regulator took action against 52 auditors during the 2023-24 reporting period. This compares with the 468 the commission pinged during the previous year.

    Last weekend, when I had family visiting, I witnessed my three-year-old nephew making a structure out of papers in my study. He wants to be a builder, like his dad, and is always making something. The papers he was using to form his building were mostly hard copies of the various housing inquiries and government strategies that have littered the landscape over the past decade. I have been reluctant to add them to landfill, having printed the material long ago.

    The NSW Minns government has proposed some good policies to help pump vital blood through Sydney with a strong policy on housing. But is it enough? Good start, but a hypothetical exercise with some developers that SGCH worked with revealed something else was needed. If we are to get blood to the muscle of the economy, workers need access to housing they can afford in proximity to where the jobs are located.
