Convened as the Growth Management Commission on Wednesday, Carson City planning commissioners approved capping population growth through residential building permits at 3 percent. With Commissioner Vern Krahn absent, the commission unanimously recommended to the Board of Supervisors approval of a resolution allocating 774 residential building permits for 2026, 802 permits for 2027 and estimates of 826 for 2028 and 851 for 2029.

Carson City will see summer-like temperatures the last weekend of May before cooler weather sets in for the beginning of June, according to the National Weather Service. The May 29 forecast showed a high of 93 degrees Fahrenheit for Friday and a high of 95 degrees for Saturday with a fire weather watch in place. Temperatures were projected to drop to a high of 87 by Sunday and 82 by Monday before hitting 70s midweek.

Having planned to retire at the end of May, Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon is staying until the end of June as the city searches for his replacement with a new city manager, the city’s executive office confirmed Wednesday. On May 15, the Board of Supervisors selected Glen Martel as the city’s next manager pending contract negotiations. Unlike the city manager position, the fire chief is hired internally.

Carson City has an approved budget heading into fiscal year 2026, which starts July 1. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved the city’s final budget that included a large undesignated amount in the general fund in case of an economic downturn and added roughly eight positions in the general fund as well. The total 2026 general fund budget came in at about $137.3 million.
