As temperatures soar over the next few days, I think it’s quite possible we’ll get very close to 30C – or even break through that big milestone. But how unusual is that? Well, yes, it’s definitely rare to hit 30C in Scotland, and even rarer this early in the season. What’s driving it? Much warmer air than usual is being drawn up from the south – the same plume that’s pushed parts of France and Spain close to 40C recently, which is also exceptionally hot for this time of year.

The warmest spell of 2025 so far is on the way this week, with temperatures potentially climbing to their highest levels since summer 2023. Much like last week, a plume of warm air from North Africa will drift northwards later in the week. By Friday -likely the warmest day – temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-20s across the country.

Temperatures officially reached 22°C on Wednesday in parts of the Highlands, Perthshire, Renfrewshire and Aberdeenshire. However, Thursday or Friday could well be the warmest day of the year so far.

After four to five weeks without a drop of rain in some areas, the dry spell came to a sudden end, right on cue for the late May holiday weekend. And what an end it was. Some of the heaviest downpours hit western parts of the country, where rain and thundery downpours brought more than four weeks’ worth of rainfall in just a few days.

What’s your favourite smell of summer? Is it the lovely smell of suntan lotion on your skin, the smoky aroma of a sizzling BBQ, the fragrance of blooming roses in the garden, the chlorine of a holiday swimming pool – or that earthy smell of rain hitting dry ground after weeks of sunshine… petrichor? Many of you will have noticed that distinct holiday smell when you step off a plane – not the jet fuel, but that earthy, warm scent in the air.
