Since the first mom demanded that her kid turn it off and go outside, television has gotten a bad rap as an inherently antisocial pursuit. But in an increasingly siloed age when movie theaters are struggling, terrestrial radio is all but obsolete, and I have to drag my own children out of fathomless YouTube rabbit holes, TV endures as one of society’s last remaining watercooler experiences (even as remote work is endangering watercoolers).

For more than a hundred years—through both world wars, the Great Depression, and countless agricultural busts and booms—the residents of Clifton have been able to watch a movie at the Cliftex. The single-screen theater has stood here in the cattle country of Bosque County since 1916, surviving droughts, floods, and the rise of streaming video, under a line of caretakers whose names are inscribed on a long stretch of wooden plaques hanging in the lobby.

This October, fans of the horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre can attend a special fiftieth anniversary screening on the lawn of Hooper’s, the Kingsland restaurant that’s situated inside the actual farmhouse that was used in the movie. If you need a little diversion in these polarized times, here’s a story I did for the Nov. issue of @TexasMonthly about a small-town film society that’s introducing Kurosawa to cattle ranchers inside the oldest movie theater in the state. https://t.co/XJqYD0tSWs

I've done a lot of interviews, but the one I usually cite as my favorite is this Random Roles I did with Teri Garr, where she clearly had no fucks left to give. Such a funny, tenacious, and lovable person. I hope George Burns is taking good care of her. https://t.co/BMjlDIpxO5 https://t.co/5mm1o9gSzg
