People with delusional infestation often seek treatment from infectious diseases clinicians. The condition was first described in the literature in the 1890s by the French physician George Thibierge, who introduced the term “acarophobia” and described a series of patients with the devastating, unshakeable belief that they were infested with mites [1]. Over the following 50 years, several European physicians, including Swedish neurologist Dr. Karl Ekbom, further described the condition [1–5].
