Telangana has followed in the footsteps of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, to officially recognise heatwaves as a ‘State-specific disaster’ and raised ex-gratia amount for victims’ families to ₹4 lakh. The move comes in the wake of the India Meteorological Department’s warning that both average temperatures and the frequency of heatwaves are expected to rise across all climate scenarios.

A day after a two-metre stucco portion of Charminar’s south-eastern minaret fell during the rain on Thursday afternoon, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team carried out an initial assessment to restore the national monument. “We are waiting for the India Meteorological Department forecast. We need a window of dry weather to start the work. The damage happened due to the summer rains, like it did in May 2019,” informed an ASI official.

A piece of decorative stucco work of the Charminar’s south east minaret fell during the spell of pounding rain on Thursday evening. Fragments of the stucco pieces fell on the temple that exists abutting the 430-year-old historic monument. “A fragment of the stucco that is less than one metre fell on top of the sheet of the temple. It was part of old stucco. Luckily, the stone portion has not been damaged.

The Warangal Chapata chilli, or as it is called Tomato chilli, from the State has been granted the Geographical Indication tag by the GI Registry, government of India on March 28. The chilli is called Tomato chilli as it has a bright red colour and is shaped round like a tomato. This is the 18th produce from Telangana that has secured the coveted GI tag. “We are very happy with this development.
