The inaugural GHSA Gymnastics Championship was held in 1956 and featured only a boys competition, won by Druid Hills, and in the 69 years since that first title, there have been many changes to the event. The GHSA named the competition for Dr. Lucia Norwood – who coached Lakeside-DeKalb to numerous gymnastics championships – in 2018. She was inducted into the Lakeside-DeKalb High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 for a lifetime of dedication to gymnastics and high school sports.

Grayson overtook the top spot in Class 6A with Archer, Norcross, Harrison and Lambert in the top five after former No. 1 Harrison lost back-to-back matches against Campbell (2-1) and Hillgrove (3-0). Carrollton, Marietta, North Atlanta, Pebblebrook and Collins Hill round out the top 10 in Class 6A. In Class 5A, River Ridge leads again ahead of McIntosh, Johns Creek, Sprayberry and Lassiter. Dalton tops Class 4A ahead of Marist, Westminster, Blessed Trinity and St. Pius X in the top five.

The games begin Wednesday through Saturday with the CO-ED 3-point contest Thursday, the girls 3-point contest Friday and the slam dunk contest Saturday following the AAASP Wheelchair state championship game. WE JUST WANT ONEEntering the championship games are programs looking for their first-ever state titles and on the boys side, those teams are North Cobb Christian (Private), Holy Innocents’ (Private), McIntosh County Academy (A-Division II) and B.E.S.T. Academy (A-Division I).

Canadian-American James Naismith invented basketball 38 years later and it seems the Pickens natives have been honing their games ever since. Ok, that might not be historically accurate and I’m sure it took some time for the sport to reach the foothills of the northern part of the state. But once basketball did enter the realm of daily life in Pickens County, it stuck.

If you were forced to make a prediction for the Class A Division II championship matchup, it would be a wise pick to expect a Bowdon-Manchester rematch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Manchester is ranked at the top of the class, and Bowdon is No. 2. Just don’t tell the traveling teams – No. 3 Irwin County (at Bowdon) and No. 4 Brooks County (at Manchester). They don’t care about last season. And for that matter, neither does Manchester or two-time defending champion Bowdon (11-2).
