As you sit on the couch with family and friends gathered around for the holidays, laughing, conversing, with “Jingle Bells” playing in the background while fluffy snowflakes cascade down from the sky through the window, many thoughts likely will cross your mind. Many senses will be tempted with delight. The warmth of the fire, the feel of that on your back. The sound of crackling of the wood. The smell of sugar cookies baking. The taste of the icicle you see dangling from the gutter.

I will always remember the times walking around the backyard of my family friend’s house for their fall Sukkot party, and the sight of the sukkah around back adorned with branches and dried fall leaves. It was always such a symbolic wilderness shelter, where all family and friends would gather inside, pass through, eat, talk, with sounds of the local neighborhood band acoustics strumming in the background. This is a time of year to appreciate community and togetherness. We need more of that.

Friends. Family. A funny joke. A sunrise, a sunset. A nice run or walk. Meditation. Reading. Writing. Giving a stranger a compliment or a helping hand. A cool breeze. Changing leaves, the seasons. Ocean waves. And, the green spaces of the outdoors in nature. Which actually have been linked to better physical, as well as mental health. The link between enjoying green spaces and better health seems to stem from the mere fact of increased exercise if you are outdoors.
