The first CIF-SS softball title was handed out in 1974. In the 51 years since, there have been 293 CIF-SS softball championship games across all divisions. None of them have included a desert softball team. That drought ends this weekend. After half a century with no desert finalists, 2025 features two. The Seattle Kraken made a decision on one of the Firebirds' more notable potential free agents Wednesday, announcing that they have extended the contract of John Hayden. The new deal is a two-year, one-way contract extension at $775,000 per year starting with the 2025-26 season, and means Hayden will not enter free agency. Hayden played 20 games for the Kraken last season and 44 games for the Firebirds. A one-way contract hints that plan A would be for Hayden to start the season with the Kraken.

But unfortunately, for a second straight year, their postseason run will fall one step short of the championship game. Rancho Mirage went on the road to Costa Mesa on Tuesday for a Division 6 CIF-SS semifinal at Estancia High School and lost a nail-biter 4-3, ending another remarkable season.

But before we look at the candidates for this week's honor, let's look back at last week's winner. You voted and you chose Xavier Prep golfer Ayden Rosales. Rosales helped lead the Saints to a CIF-SS Division 3 title, with a 2-over-par 74 at Green River Golf Club in Corona. This week's winner, as always, is up to you.
