The 2024-25 school year was a remarkable season for girls' sports in the desert. From the debut of flag football in the fall to the first-ever CIF-SS softball title in desert history pulled off by Rancho Mirage in the spring, we saw it all. In between, there were some unbelievable individual performances from female athletes playing multiple sports or finishing among the best in the state in a single sport.

Xavier Prep sophomore Malia Strange cemented herself among the best triple jumpers in the state again this year, with a fifth-place finish at Saturday's state finals meet, validating her remarkable freshman effort last year when she finished in fourth place. Competing at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Strange finished 11th out of 32 competitors in the qualifying round, doing just enough to be in the 12-person championship round.

The Seattle Kraken announced Monday that they have signed Ben Meyers, who was the Coachella Valley Firebirds leading scorer last season, to a one-year contract extension, keeping him with the organization through the 2025-26 season. Meyers, who was set to be a free agent on July 1, will now stay with the Kraken. The one-year, one-way deal is worth $775,000, the same amount he made this season. Meyers was a key player for the Firebirds in the 2024-25 season.

In a championship game, every mistake is magnified. The Cathedral City softball team learned that the hard way on Saturday. No desert softball team had ever made a CIF-SS championship game before Friday, but since Rancho Mirage was the first, they figured they might as well win it. The Rattlers faced Culver City in the Division 7 CIF-SS title game in Irvine and came home with a 7-3 win and a whole lot of history. Put simply, when centerfielder Mariah Botley caught a long liner for the final out, the Rattlers became the first high school softball team in the history of the desert to win a CIF-SS title.
