South’s Africa’s climate philanthropy pledge – the first of its kind in Africa at large – has expended with two new members joining. The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation and the Harry Crossley Foundation are the latest to join the pioneering initiative, bringing the total number of signatories to twelve. The initiative formalises philanthropy’s recognition that the climate crisis as an issue that cuts across all funding focus areas and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Brazil’s philanthropic sector is being held back by a wide scale ‘lack of knowledge about the mechanisms by which endowment funds work, resistance to donations from the private sector and few tax incentives’. That’s according to IDIS, an independent organisation that aims to strengthen philanthropy in Brazil lobbying for better and improved regulation in place.

China has reformed a law that has been long described as a ‘burden’, removing the need for nonprofits and foundations to report so-called suspicious transactions that might finance terrorism or money laundering. The law originally came in 2017. Money laundering within nonprofits and foundations, however, has been judged to be almost nonexistent and has burdened many with substantial financial costs.

UK grantmaking has risen by 7 per cent year-on-year on average, although endowment levels have remained ‘flat’, according to a new report published by 360 Giving. The annual research paper, which takes a snapshot of British philanthropy, said grants specifically from trusts and foundations increased by 12 per cent from 2024, with a total of up to £8.2 billion distributed. The largest 100 UK grantmakers upped their grants by 9 per cent.

Singapore-based Asia Philanthropy Circle will see a new chief executive take the helm from July. Esther Chang previously helped to advance corporate sustainability and cross-sector partnerships for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, as executive director of the UN Global Compact Network Singapore. The Taiwanese-Canadian, who has lived in Asia for over a decade, begins her role as APC marks its ten year anniversary. Carol Tan will step down after two years as CEO.
