New Kensington’s Fridays on Fifth opened for the season on Friday. The street event will take place on the fourth Friday of the month from 5 to 9 p.m. through September. Food trucks were out in force for opening evening, offering just about any type of food one could think of. They came from New Ken and Arnold and as far away as Pittsburgh to offer their fares. Cross Roads Community Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church in Leechburg held a Good Friday cross walk in which a group of about two dozen church members carted small wooden crosses around town to place in front of businesses and institutions. Hundreds of people lined the streets of New Kensington on Saturday to enjoy the city’s annual Christmas parade. The parade featured fire trucks, the Valley High School Marching Band, children and adults parading on foot or riding on floats from a slew of Alle-Kiski social organizations and businesses that decked their vehicles for the occasion. The day was certainly chilly and breezy, but there was plenty of sunshine.

Residents flocked to Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium Thursday for the city’s National Night Out event, meeting first responders and learning about safety practices. Attendees met city police officers, K-9 officers and their dogs from across the county, the Greensburg Fire Department’s bloodhound team and the Hempfield-based Top Dog therapy dog team. An Army Blackhawk helicopter and armored BearCat vehicles were on display.
