The southbound lanes of the Route 1 overpass at Route 16 in Milton are set to open early in the week of April 21. The Delaware Department of Transportation has been working on grade-separating the busy intersection since 2022. The signalized intersection frequently stalls Route 1 traffic, which can back up considerably in the summertime, and traffic on Route 16, headed in and out of Milton and Broadkill, often sits for long red lights.

Delaware State Police have arrested a second suspect in the March 12 murder of 23-year-old Schweitzer Dessin in Seaford. Surveillance footage from that afternoon showed about 20 people gathered in Nutter Park, off Norman Eskridge Highway, court documents say. Gunfire broke out, and when police arrived, they found 23-year-old Schweitzer Dessin suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Three others were injured in the incident.
Seal survives crossing Coastal Highway south of Delaware Seashore State Park

A seal pup somehow survived scooting across all four lanes of Coastal Highway south of Delaware Seashore State Park recently. The Lewes-based nonprofit Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute took in the 2½-month-old female gray seal, according to a Facebook post. "It survived the gauntlet and was stuck in vegetation on the side of the road," the post said. "Andromeda," as MERR representatives have named the female seal, had bite wounds and is receiving care, the post said.

The plan for a new Delaware State Police Troop 4, near Sussex Central High School on Patriots Way in Millsboro is moving forward. After the Sussex County Council approved a conditional use permit for the site IN 2024, a site plan was approved by the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission. The 44-acre property is farmland and has no wetlands, plans say, and is located between the Stockley Center and Delaware Veterans Cemetery.
Emu or emus loose in southern Delaware may have come from Maryland

An emu, or possibly multiple emus, has been on the loose on the Delmarva Peninsula since January 1. Emus are large birds that are capable of traveling long distances and can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Officials advise the public avoid the feral emu or emus. People in at least three counties and two states on Delmarva continue to be emu-sed by an unusual feral animal – or animals – that's been on the run since New Year's Day.
