The Government of Canada recently released Proposed Oil and Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cap Regulations ("Proposed Regulations")1 under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 ("CEPA").1 The Proposed Regulations set a cap on greenhouse gas "(GHG") emissions from the oil and gas sector, equivalent to 35 percent below 2019 levels.

SaskPower has created a nuclear subsidiary called SaskNuclear to advance the province’s small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear project from a business and regulatory standpoint. SaskPower is planning the development of its first SMR by the mid-2030s. The subsidiary will be wholly owned by SaskPower and will share a President and CEO, as well as a Board of Directors. The utility is working towards reaching net-zero by 2050 or sooner.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) published a consultation document on July 4, 2024, seeking input from stakeholders on a proposed roadmap for addressing plastic waste and pollution from the textile and apparel sector. Governments, Indigenous groups, industry members, public advocacy and environmental groups, and the general public are invited to provide their feedback on the proposed elements of the roadmap, with the consultation process closing shortly on September 1, 2024.
