NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship winning team owner Shigeaki Hattori was killed in a car accident Saturday in Huntersville, N.C. Hattori was 61 years old. Hattori, a native of Okayama, Japan, was one of eight Japanese-born drivers to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Hattori raced in the Indianapolis 500 twice, finishing 20th in 2002 and 30th in 2003. He made 34 career IndyCar Series starts from 1999-2003.

Former Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman topped the field in the SMART Modified Tour event Saturday at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, N.C. It was the first victory of the season for Newman. Fourteen year old Paulie Hartwig III was second. Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott, driving a Gary Putnam owned entry, was third. Joey Coulter and Luke Baldwin rounded out the top- respectively.
