Tuesday's Wisconsin Supreme Court election was unambiguously a good one for Democrats. The only debate is over how many superlatives to add. The case that it was "just" good is that judicial elections are not general elections. Even big races have lower turnout than presidential contests. Democrats were favored to win in this format, and they did.

Voters can't escape ads for the Wisconsin Supreme Court race on April 1, but the same election will also decide whether a voter ID requirement should be enshrined in the state constitution. We know more now about how the requirement affects voting than we did when it was passed as a law 14 years ago. The arguments, however, have barely changed. In 2011, Republicans were in their first session of single-party control of state government, and a voter ID law was near the top of their priority list.

Trump won Wisconsin's 2024 election by 29,397 votes according to official results that were certified by the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
