Anyone who’s been to a West Deer meeting since December has seen the township’s new digs. But they’ll be able to see more than the public meeting room next month, when the township plans an open house and tours, during which residents can ask questions about the $10 million building. The one-story building has been about 10 years in the making, spans 17,600 square feet and was built without a tax increase. The building has been in use since December.

Deer Lakes School District is one of the 17 schools across Southwestern Pennsylvania participating in the creation of an animated feature-length film about confronting ecological problems impacting Earth. Each school is writing a segment of the film. Deer Lakes Middle School is focusing on deforestation.

Dr. Gina Paige, co-founder of African Ancestry, is giving African Americans the pathway to connect further with their identity and heritage. Paige will be at the Heinz History Center on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. for the “Discovering Your African Roots,” an African American Genealogy Workshop. Her appearance is the celebrate National DNA Day, which is on Friday, April 25. African Ancestry’s tests are single-lineage tests. They analyze the genetic branch of one person’s ancestry at a time.

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition awarded a $100,000 research grant to two Pittsburgh-based researchers on Thursday morning to support a focus on AI in breast cancer research and breast cancer recurrence. Through this grant, Dr. Shandong Wu, professor of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will be able to focus on AI techniques that allow for deep learning models. This research will help patients understand their risk of breast cancer recurrence after chemotherapy.
