The PA Breast Cancer Coalition awarded a $100,000 research grant to two Pittsburgh-based researchers on Thursday morning to support a focus on AI in breast cancer research and breast cancer recurrence. Through this grant, Dr. Shandong Wu, professor of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will be able to focus on AI techniques that allow for deep learning models. This research will help patients understand their risk of breast cancer recurrence after chemotherapy.

A New Kensington man and his business partner are taking pothole matters into their own hands … or phones. George Brian has partnered with City Bucket List, an app that helps people get around Pittsburgh while also highlighting attractions and places to eat and drink. He wants the app also to help folks avoid the region’s ubiquitous potholes. His idea is to incorporate another section into the app that would mark potholes on a digital map and provide alternative routes to help drivers avoid them.

Shelley Bosanac has been a scrapbooker for 20 years. The Ross native wanted to open up a store that focused on paper crafting and scrapbooking. Her store, Crafts -n- Scraps Studio, has fostered community since its opening in August 2021. “There are not as many stores like that anymore so I also decided to add in crafts,” Bosanac said. In addition to crafting, there also are card-making classes.

Art King knows egg prices nationally have been on a roller coaster ride. They still cost an average of almost three times what they did in July 2023, but not at his farm market. As co-owner of Harvest Valley Farms in West Deer, King has been selling eggs for about $6 per dozen for years, and his prices haven’t changed. He attributes it to producing some of the eggs at his own farm and buying the rest from another small local farm, not a large national egg producer.
