Something is always blooming in Sue Breedlove’s garden; there are more than 40 plant species on its 1 acre in Adams Township. White peonies, reminiscent of powdery and floral perfumes, grow in the front yard and she sometimes brings their blooms into the house for their refreshing scent. Kai' El Chavez-Massey, 12, from Homestead, was getting ready for school in a haste. He grabbed his shirt that was underneath a hot iron. With the grab, the iron tipped, and the hot side fell directly on his forearm. He was rushed to the emergency room. He stayed a few days in the hospital, and it took him a little more than a month to get to where he is at now, with a faint scar only slightly noticeable if someone is intentionally looking. But today, his mind is not focused on that.

Kyle Holbrook will not be silenced. Mr. Holbrook, an international mural artist, feels the gravity and importance of his work now more than ever after two of his murals, one in Miami and another in Oakland, Calif., were defaced with racial epithets and a swastika. When Mr. Holbrook, who has painted 800 murals across the world — many of which decorate public spaces in Pittsburgh — learned of the vandalism, it was a gut punch, but it also fueled him to keep creating art that galvanizes.
