    I’m the vegetarian at the party who smiles when you put bacon on top of your baked beans or add sausage to your mac and cheese. Don’t worry. It’s OK. I like salad and fruit. And lots of wine. And dessert!But seriously, it’s amazing how much better the spreads at cookouts and parties have gotten for vegetarians in the past 10 years. People embrace vegetable-centric dishes in ways they didn’t (or maybe couldn’t) in 1986, when I stopped eating meat. No more plain spaghetti with butter.

    We moved to Pittsburgh in 1998 because my husband, Rick Schweikert, wanted to convert a warehouse building into artist studio space. The Warehouse Workshop lived on Second Avenue by the new jail for many years, housing artists, eccentrics and techy, sometimes glitchy, start-up companies. Rick had an office on the first floor and I would stop by after finishing my day of work. I never knew who would be hanging out in that little room.
