Abstract Image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) has attracted attention as a method for detecting inflammation and predicting outcomes in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC); however, the procedure requires specialist endoscopists. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted IEE may help non-experts to provide objective accurate predictions using optical imaging.

Over the past 30 years, advanced endoscopic diagnostic techniques, such as magnifying and image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE), have been introduced into clinical practice.1, 2 More recently, ultrahigh magnification endoscopes have emerged with the compelling goal of “observing living cells in vivo,” thereby introducing the concept of optical biopsy. This approach has the potential to transform tissue biopsies, leading to cost and procedure time reductions.
