I often wonder if we were to construct a solutions enterprise to address global inequity and injustice, whether we would construct the nonprofit and civil society sectors as they are today.
Would we bind giving so tightly to tax law built around a capitalist economic framework or architect a road to progress that doesn’t run through charity bureaucracy, galas, annual reports, and all the things nonprofits must do before actually solving problems? We spend so much money to give money.

Last October, my academic advisor nonchalantly told me that the University of Oregon had some funding to send me to a philanthropy conference in Kuala Lumpur and asked if I wanted to go; I did not have to think long before replying with an enthusiastic “yes”. Being relatively new to the PhD world (in my first year of study), opportunities like these do not feel normal – and I hope I never lose sight of how magical it is to fly across the world to meet thousands of likeminded people.

The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund has recently announced its fifth round of grants in response to the increasing educational barriers that vulnerable and refugee youth currently face within Jordan, Lebanon and conflict-affected countries in the UAE.
The Fund has so far awarded AED 120 million (£25 million) in grants over the last four rounds of funding which has impacted more than 62,000 refugees in the region.
