As I drove down a chalk lane flanked by vineyards and olive trees, and through iron gates, I felt a world away from the busy harbour city I had left behind that September morning. Just a 30-minute drive from Pula, the serenity of the countryside was palpable. So too was the restful atmosphere inside the courtyard of Meneghetti, a farmhouse turned wine hotel and winery.

But an affordable, no-fly weekend cruise caught my attention. No airport stress, no battle for the armrest – and the chance to wake up in glittering Antwerp – what wasn’t to like? Not to mention that Ambassador Cruise Line’s second ship, Ambition, is far more luxurious than a low-cost flight.
