Attorneys say a new courtroom broadcast feature set to roll out this month in Los Angeles County probate courts will be a welcome change from the current system, particularly in a specialty that often involves overlapping court hearings in separate departments. A California appeals court has thrown out a $10 million jury verdict in a sexual harassment case against the Los Angeles Community College District, ruling that the trial judge's "bizarre" racial and sexist comments -- along with improper evidentiary rulings -- denied the defendants a fair trial and tainted the proceedings beyond repair. A new trial was ordered. "It seems clear the judge's rulings were motivated by personal opinions untethered to the rules of evidence," the panel's opinion read.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court put out a call Friday for experienced attorneys to apply for its temporary judge program. "This program is a unique opportunity for qualified attorneys to serve in one of the nation's largest and most diverse court systems, contribute to the administration of justice, gain valuable experience on the bench, and give back to the Los Angeles County community," the court's announcement read.
