Some of my fondest memories as a child were cuddling my mom on the couch on a Friday or Saturday night to watch early 90’s and 2000’s rom-coms with buttery popcorn and DOTS. As a six-year-old obsessed with She’s the Man and A Cinderella Story, I became a hopeless romantic. My definition of love coming from these movies. Long blonde hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. Three things I wished I had growing up because according to early 2000’s romantic comedies, those were the girls that got the guy.

As viewers we have responsibilities, if we don’t support diverse and inclusive productions, we could be sending the wrong message to executives. However, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Many of the inclusive series don’t get much exposure on streaming platforms – while you’re bombarded with hype for big productions, the smaller, under-supported ones get lost in the mass of content. And then, because Latinx series tend to be in that category, they all get canceled.

Queer Afro-Latinx Dominican and Puerto Rican writer Alyssa Reynoso-Morris is the author of several picture books for children. One of her most recent projects, Plátanos Are Love, has sold over 10,000 copies in about six months and is in its second printing. It shows a little girl learning the secrets of plátanos from her grandmother, who shows her that this special fruit is an important part of her history, culture, food, and identity.

More people need to be discussing the triumph that is Ana. There’s something vibrant and whimsical about a Latina take on “slice of life TV,” and Ana de la Reguera is a trailblazer as she wrote, directed, and portrayed herself in a LATAM Comedy Central original series (2020-2023), now available in the US on ViX. The show is based on her own life as a former Mexican Telenovela actress trying to make it in Hollywood.
