Share Athletes from dozens of locales will be chasing Frisbees and diving to snag them all over the sand of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this weekend. For the eighth year, the USA Ultimate Beach Championships have arrived. Event producer George Alcaraz of Resort Management said about 85 teams comprising 1,200 people from all over the nation, plus some from Canada, are on the beach for 5-on-5 competition Saturday and Sunday.

Three youngsters from Axsom Martial Arts in Newport News were part of a United States team of 25 that went to Serbia for the International School Sports Federation Gymnasiade Games for athletes age 15 and under. The April event — think “youth Olympics” — included competitors from 34 countries, was governed by the International Olympic Committee and featured competition in kata (forms), kumite (fighting) and kobudo (weapons).

William & Mary edged the College of Charleston 5-4 Friday night before 476 at Plumeri Park to open a key Coastal Athletic Association baseball series. The Tribe (20-25, 13-6) tightened its hold on second place, four games behind Northeastern. Trailing 4-3, W&M went ahead for good in the seventh off Cougars starter Jake Brink (5-5). Charlie Iriotakis doubled home Derek Holmes with the tying run, and Jerry Barnes III’s sacrifice fly to right then scored Anthony Greco for a 5-4 lead.
