The Virginian-Pilot

The Virginian-Pilot, often referred to simply as The Pilot, is the primary daily newspaper serving the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. As the largest daily publication in the state, it caters to the five cities of South Hampton Roads and several smaller communities in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Founded in 1865 at the end of the American Civil War, it remained a family-run business until it was sold to Tribune Publishing in 2018. Currently, The Virginian-Pilot is under the ownership of Tribune Publishing, which was acquired by Alden Global Capital in May 2021. Alden manages its media assets through Digital First Media.

Listeners knew Cunningham as Mark McKay, who spent close to 20 years — from 1999 to 2019 — hosting both morning and afternoon shows as a DJ, music director and assistant program director for Max Media’s 97.3 The Eagle. He rose to program director in 2012.
