As sunlight floods the room, spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the eye is immediately drawn to vibrant shades of blue and green jumping off the artwork hung on sterile white walls. Spotlighted against the otherwise minimalist Sprague Gallery, Jonathan Jackson’s vibrant abstract works perform a beautiful contrast, displaying his intricate linework, imagination and color. On Oct. 18, the Sprague Gallery at Harvey Mudd College opened “Lines,” the first solo exhibition of Jackson’s work.

On Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m., Claremont College students began gathering outside Pomona College’s Smith Campus Center for “Shut Pom Down for Palestine,” part of a “global call” to action for divestment organized by Palestinian Youth Movement, National Students for Justice in Palestine and International People’s Assembly. This protest comes just over two weeks after hundreds of 7C students walked out of classes to demand Pomona divest from Israeli companies.

On a typical morning, the Pit-Stop is packed with students grabbing their coffees to-go or a quick breakfast before their first class. The blend of student voices, coffee grinders and espresso machine creates a comforting ambiance throughout this small but homey space. For some, such an environment may be overstimulating in the morning, but for many Pitzer students, a trip to the Pit-Stop signifies the start of a new day.

As we move into a new academic year, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on the past one — specifically on the ways in which Pitzer College and Claremont Colleges administrations responded to student activists last spring. The 2022-23 academic year at Pitzer was defined by student activism movements to support unionizing workers and their labor rights.
