Students from 24 schools around Sacramento traded their classrooms for the courtroom this month, stepping into roles as attorneys, witnesses, and bailiffs in the county’s annual mock trial competition. The program is held at the Sacramento County Superior Court and offers high school students an immersive experience in the courtroom, giving them a taste of real-world litigation.

Following President Donald Trump’s executive orders on undocumented immigrants, which have led to thousands of arrests nationally, Sacramento City Unified School District is reaffirming its commitment as a safe haven district. School board members, union leaders, and community organizers from Spanish-speaking, South Asian, Hmong, and Black communities coalesced to oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, deportations at school sites.

Los Angeles schools have become the latest casualty in a series of wildfires. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the number of wildfires this month alone has doubled from the number of total fires last year. At least a dozen public schools have burned and over 700,000 students and staff have been displaced.

Kamilah, a Sacramento high school junior, sits on his bed in a room adorned with SpongeBob SquarePants posters as SZA’s “Saturn” plays in the background. For Kamilah, who has ADHD, music helps him stay focused — a constant challenge, especially in school. “It’s easier to concentrate when I have music in my ear,” said Kamilah.
