A crowd in suits and dresses stood around a roped off circle in the midday heat on the Capitol lawn on Tuesday. Inside the circle were several containers of frogs. Every year in Sacramento, politicians, staff and the press compete in a quirky contest – the annual frog jump on the Capitol lawn. It has roots in a Mark Twain short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” — which made him and the tradition famous.

A bill moving through the California legislature would allow housing and shelters that require residents to remain sober to receive state homelessness funds. Right now, the state funds residential centers that do not require residents to remain sober, though most ban using drugs or alcohol onsite. State leaders say this Housing First policy allows people to fulfill basic needs before attempting recovery.

Dean Bonner, PPIC’s associate survey director, contributed to the poll. “This was the first question we asked specifically about armed police whenever school is in session,” Bonner said. “The fact that 7 in 10 Californians [agreed], including bipartisan agreement, was really interesting to me, and it was surprising.”The poll found 86% of Republicans supported the idea, compared to 62% percent of Democrats. The survey showed a gap between firearm owners and those without.
