Commissioners, sheriff to hold public meetings seeking community input on future of county jail

JEFFERSON - The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners invites residents to participate in two public meetings on Wednesday, Feb. 12, to discuss the future of the Ashtabula County Jail. Meetings will be held at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Ashtabula County Commissioners’ Conference Room, located at 25 West Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047.

JEFFERSON - Pentecostal Community Church, in collaboration with the Ashtabula County commissioners and local stakeholders, late last year announced the receipt of a $1.5 million award in the 2024 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) from the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Pittsburgh branch. This critical funding will support efforts to address homelessness, specifically targeting the youth population in Ashtabula County.

ORWELL - The Country Neighbor Program, Inc., has received a belated Christmas present. Jessica Paulic recently presented a $1,722 check to Country Neighbor Executive Director Barb Klingensmith and Associate Director Jim Long, with the donation a result of the Paulic family’s annual Christmas Lights for a Cause event. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Paulic family hosted the Annual Christmas Lights for a Cause at 5633 Mechanicsville Rd. in Hartsgrove Township.
Commissioners speak at ‘Meet the Commissioners’ event

ROCK CREEK - The Ashtabula County commissioners spoke at a “Meet the Commissioners” program hosted by the Rock Creek Area Chamber of Commerce at the Rock Creek VFW on Friday, Jan. 17. The January program has become a tradition for the commissioners. They took turns speaking about some of the progress made in the county in 2024, as well as plans for 2025. As the new president of the board, Commissioner J.P. Ducro IV spoke first. “We look forward to this every year,” Ducro said.
Future of Pymatuning Lake Festival discussed

JEFFERSON - A group of community leaders and stakeholders met on Wednesday, Jan. 16, to discuss the future of the Pymatuning Lake Festival. Ashtabula County Commissioner Kathryn Whittington spearheaded the meeting, which was held in the commissioners’ meeting room of the Old Ashtabula County Courthouse. Held in early August every year by the Pymatuning Area Chamber of Commerce, the Pymatuning Lake Festival celebrated its 20th year in 2024.
Yamamoto sworn in as auditor

JEFFERSON - The Ashtabula County Republican Party Central Committee met on Jan. 13 at the Jefferson Recreation and Community Center and appointed Scott Yamamoto as the successor for the remainder of former Auditor David Thomas’ term, which is until 2027. The Ashtabula County commissioners previously had appointed Yamamoto as an acting auditor until the Republican Party Central Committee met to appoint its choice.

Lakeside Junior High School is new site, due to roof collapse at LHS SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - A new location has been found for the 2025 Remote Area Medical (RAM), after the roof collapse at Lakeside High School following the Thanksgiving weekend winter storm made the building unusable this year. The RAM Clinic instead will be held next door at the Lakeside Junior High School, 6620 Sanborn Rd., Ashtabula, on Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, 2025.

JAHS students assist with HALO program

JEFFERSON - On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Jefferson Area High School Senior Leadership Club, as well as JAHS senior and junior class officers, helped pack boxes of gifts for the HALO program. HALO’s Share Your Christmas program is a community outreach program coordinated by Catholic Charities designed to help those in need with food and toys during the Christmas season. JAHS students assembled boxes and filled those boxes with toys and gifts for families throughout Ashtabula County.
Yamamoto sworn in as acting auditor

JEFFERSON - In what was their final resolution for 2024, the Ashtabula County commissioners appointed Scott Yamamoto as the acting auditor for Ashtabula County during their meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Yamamoto replaces David Thomas, who resigned his position as auditor, effective at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, as he was elected by voters to serve as State Representative for the 65th District of the State of Ohio.
