This year’s edition of the Francos de Montréal music festival promises an electric mix of iconic artists, fresh francophone talent and unforgettable performances, all right in the heart of downtown Montreal. Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering the festival for the first time, there’s no better time to dive into the rhythms, poetry and pure energy of French-language music.

The new album by Montreal’s SAMWOY is a haunted mixtape left behind in a burnt-out skate park where spectres attempt kickflips. Equal parts post-punk dirge, skate punk tantrum, hip hop confession, French lounge pop and cinematic hallucination, Even Sad Boys… refuses to sit still.

There’s nothing simple about the experimental pop music of Montreal’s N NAO. Even an oscillating synth number like “Fleuron,” mixed with ethereal, hard to decipher vocals, has a thematic drive to it. Art d’Ecco is somewhat of a shapeshifter from album to album, so I had no idea what to expect going into his latest, Serene Demon. The result is a boiling affair of catchy dance punk and disco glam rock that brings to mind the work of artists like T-Rex and Boney M. The highlight of this album has to be its variety of instruments: congas, synths, steel drums, marimbas, horns and basslines that get the feet moving.

This article was originally published in Pan M 360, and as part of an article-sharing collaboration with them, we are sharing it here. We open the door and step into La Lumière Collective, a large, open, and bright room surrounded by various film, art, and concert posters. A hollowed-out old tube TV is surrounded by books and records at the back of the room. Sets of red movie theatre seats are off to the side in the middle of the room, and a projector hangs above.
