Tao Hui’s Landscape of Opposites

Tao Hui’s first institutional show in Hong Kong, ‘In the Land Beyond Living’, opens with a landscape of opposites. The first works that visitors encounter include a curtain of multicoloured, cast-glass chicken’s feet hanging at the show’s entrance. A delicacy in Chinese cuisine, chicken’s feet are considered talismans of fortune given their association with the mythical phoenix, hence the installation’s title: Money Grab Hand (2024).

Initially Begum's works were representational, but as she became exposed to artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Sol LeWitt, she carried her interest in line, colour, and light towards an abstracted exploration of repetition and materiality. During her Masters degree, the artist gained inspiration from Latin American artists including Jesús Rafael de Soto and Hélio Oiticica, and Constructivist artists such as Charles Biederman.

As Ahmed Mater: Chronicles opens on 17 July at Christie's in London, visitors will be able to learn more about the artist's Land Art commission for Wadi AlFann, Valley of the Arts, AlUla. Over the years, Mater has been a significant cultural voice documenting the realities of contemporary Saudi Arabia. It was when he enrolled to study medicine that he developed an interest in photography. A year later, Mater started experimenting with discarded X-rays from the local hospital during his studies.

On the occasion of his eponymously titled show at Hauser & Wirth, held earlier this year in Hong Kong, the artist met with Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, to discuss Baldwin and his impact on Ligon's practice. Ligon and Golden are long-time friends widely recognised for their influence on contemporary art. Individually, they have both been featured in ArtReview's Power 100, and Golden was included on the 2024 Time 100 list.
