Now, being in the news business myself, I’ve never been one to advocate for burying your head in the sand and ignoring the news altogether. An uninformed populace is how we’ve gotten the last few presidents, ranging from lackluster to entirely incompetent (I’ll let you rank them accordingly).

Kellie Watts came to George Walton Academy five years ago, having followed an unusual pathway into the education field. “I graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering and I did that for about 12 years,” Watts said. “But I didn’t feel like I was fulfilling my purpose. I felt I needed to teach.”After teaching at Peachtree Academy for a couple of years, Watts came to GWA to start an Advanced Placement Physics program and started an uphill climb from there.

Judge John Ott may be retired, but he’s not leaving the Walton County Courthouse any time soon. He already comes in semi-regularly to do judicial work on a part-time basis, despite ending his tenure as chief judge of the Alcovy Judicial Circuit. But now he can assured, even when he stops coming into the courts personally, that he can continue to stare down at criminals and attorneys for years to come, after his formal portrait was unveiled last month.

Celebrating some of Walton County’s best and brightest, The Walton Tribune honored multiple public servants, volunteers and others during its annual Visions banquet Monday night. The Tribune, in concert with the release of its Visions 2025 magazine, held the banquet earlier in the week to honor several Unsung Heroes, the Youth of the Year, the Employer of the Year and the Community Spirit Award winner.
