As you might expect, given how much I talk about books in this column, my chronic reading habit has made me a regular sight at all of Walton County’s public libraries. I visit the Monroe-Walton County library the most, of course, given I not only live in Monroe, but my workplace here at The Tribune is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the building. I can walk over when I wish to.

For years, residents talked about the possibility, dreaming, planning, yearning to see a YMCA come to Walton County. Well, the dream has finally come true. Following a multi-year fund-raising and construction project, the Walton County YMCA is finally open. The doors opened Thursday at 10 a.m. and it didn’t take long for new members of the Walton Y to come pouring in to take advantage of the new center’s many amenities. The biggest attraction, of course, was the pool.

Loganville Christian Academy students took place in a solemn moment this week as several of the private school’s eighth graders placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

The Walton County Board of Education is poised to approve a contract to upgrade and renovate the auditorium spaces at all three of the Walton County School District’s high schools. The board will vote on a $5.3 million agreement with Grahl Construction to overhaul the theater spaces at Loganville, Walnut Grove and Monroe Area high schools at its next monthly meeting, set for Monday, April 14, due to spring break falling during the usual meeting time and date.

Carol Fairman, executive director of A Center of Hope, presented quite a few numbers Monday night at the pregnancy health center’s annual gala — 366 new clients in 2024, 292 ultrasounds, 345 pregnancy tests, hundreds of new classes — but she highlighted one above all. Fifty-five.
