There has been a great deal of change since the calendar read 1988. For those of you, like myself, who are old enough to have been around in 1988 that statement is certainly true, both personally and professionally. In August of that year, I was entering my senior year of high school. One day during a class I was taking called “publications,” the teacher asked if anyone was interested in submitting articles about the football games for our local newspaper.

As a proud American, I am forever grateful to the many men and women who gave it all for our country. It is a sacrifice that I couldn’t begin to comprehend. I’m especially empathetic to veterans because one of the most important people in my life was one. Larry Marvin Newton, my grandfather, was especially impactful in my development into the man I am today. Larry, or as I called him “Papa,” was just one of those people who made the world a better place when he was around.

The Social Circle Board of Education announced the sole finalist for the superintendent job at a special called meeting Tuesday. The board voted 7-0 to name Matthew Remillard as the sole finalist for superintendent of Social Circle City Schools after more than a week of closed sessions interview prospective candidates for the position. Remillard, if approved next month for the role, would replace Carrie Booher, who was suddenly let go as superintendent without explanation earlier this year.

County officials ventured to Hard Labor Creek for the official start of the new county water treatment facility. “This is a big step for the county,” Walton Chairman David Thompson told The Walton Tribune. “We presently purchase all of our water through Newton County and Cornish Creek Reservoir with plans to build our own freshwater treatment plant.”Thompson said a $46.2 million grant has been secured for the project. “That helped us to see the daylight to move forward,” Thompson said.

Memorial Day is May 26 this year. For many, the day is viewed as an unofficial start to summer and it’s easy to understand why. The school year is complete. Families begin taking vacations. Cookouts are planned and will be enjoyed. There’s certainly nothing wrong with any of these events. In fact, in many ways they are all a great slice of Americana. However, May 26 is a day which should be honored for something much greater.
