Editor’s note: Nov. 2 is the three-year anniversary of the Braves clinching the 2021 World Series championship with a Game 6 win over the Astros in Houston. The AJC looks back on that moment in Braves history. The cold side of baseball is told in numbers. So many numbers competing for relevance, climbing over each other for a place on the outfield video board. But the still warm, yeasty, right-out-of-the-oven soul of the game can’t be quantified. It can only be felt.

Alone among participants in an event that tracks back to 1903, Freddie Freeman has homered in six consecutive World Series games. The first two came in 2021, when he was a Brave. They were his last acts as a Brave. That Freeman’s four latest Fall Classic clouts have come for a different team leaves us both excited and wistful. HAMPTON – Joey Logano was a 9-year-old leadfoot in training the first time he saw the Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1999. He remembers that moment every time he drives onto the property – and drives around it at a ridiculous pace, sometimes winning wild races. We’re halfway through quirky, non-traditional playoff season in Atlanta. Quirky as in there’s more to the format than simply winning or losing. Some math is involved. And who doesn’t like a little light addition? We’ve just lived through another Tour Championship at East Lake, where PGA Tour golf goes to finish off its brief but spectacularly profitable playoffs. That one featured a bizarro-world handicap system in which it’s the best players, not the worst, who get strokes.

Driver Kyle Larson leads the circular bullet train of stock cars into the first of NASCAR’s 10 playoff races Sunday, the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He should see nothing but blue skies and promise. He enters with more wins than anyone through the season’s first 26 races – four. He’s the points leader among the 16 playoff drivers in this first round, and is a betting favorite to win it all.
