Marian Sunabe drives from her home in South Pasadena to visit her 100-year-old mother in Gardena once a week or so, and I tagged along on a recent morning to talk about the crippling cost of elder care. Sunabe, a retired school psychologist, said her mother is independent-minded, loves the comfort of her own home and doesn’t want to move in with Sunabe or her brother. For the last four years, Reiko Kobata has had a daytime caregiver.

Well, we could just cancel baseball. And, to be safe, every doughnut shop in Los Angeles should be closed pending investigation. Some Dodgers fans might be undocumented, which could explain why federal agents were camped near Dodger Stadium on Thursday but denied entry. Or there could be another reason. Roughly a quarter of the players in Major League Baseball are from outside the country.

Now and again, while walking Philly near the Rose Bowl, I bump into a dog trainer named Eldon, who generously offers pointers. My cheesesteak-shaped beagle used to go on strike during walks, but he's improving thanks in part to Eldon's tips. I wanted to write about that, but Eldon said he's mostly retired and doesn't need the publicity. His only new clients, he told me, are dogs who are still struggling with PTSD from the Eaton wildfire in January.
