Although Sacramento is enjoying a brief break from stormy weather today after two atmospheric river storms doused the region, a third system is expected to arrive tomorrow bringing with it more rain and cold temperatures.

The Sacramento region is in store for more rain this week after being inundated with rain over the weekend. The second of three atmospheric river storms begins moving through the area Monday, according to Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento. It starts this afternoon at 4 p.m. and ends Wednesday morning. "We do have a Flood Watch in effect across the area from this afternoon to late Tuesday night," Kurth said.

The Sacramento Zoo made progress last week and is on track to move to Elk Grove from Land Park with the announcement that the Sacramento Zoological Society reached its $17.5 million fundraising milestone. The proposed zoo will be a 65-acre site near Kammerer Road Lotz Parkway in Elk Grove. Although the milestone has been met, Elk Grove's city council members are divided on what to name the new zoo.

While it likely won’t be as sweltering as last week, forecasters are still warning that dangerously hot temperatures will persist in the Sacramento region this week. Chris Hintz, a meteorologist with the weather service in Sacramento, said temperatures in the first half of the week will range around the upper 90s to low 100s. “Just looking at temperatures this morning, they're running about eight to 10 degrees cooler than they were yesterday morning at this time,” he told CapRadio.

Updated 4:54 p.m.An expected seven-day stretch of “major to extreme” high temperatures have prompted Northern California officials to issue heat, fire and power warnings. The heat set in on Monday, with high temperatures recorded at 102 degrees in downtown Sacramento, according to the National Weather Service. That heat is expected to be at its highest between Wednesday and Sunday, with little relief at night.
