    From the state Capitol to city halls, shopping centers and highway overpasses, thousands of people took part in “No Kings” rallies Saturday across Sacramento and surrounding counties. According to its website, “No Kings” is a nationwide day of defiance against the Trump administration. It was planned on Saturday to align with Washington D.C.'s largest military parade in decades to celebrate the U.S. army’s 250th anniversary. It’s also Trump’s 79th birthday and Flag Day.

    Christian Gates has been part of Sacramento’s music scene since 2016. Performing as The Philharmonik, his sound blends soul, funk and hip-hop into something unmistakably his own. In 2024 his entry in NPR’s Tiny Desk contest, “What’s It All Mean,” won the top prize and introduced his music to a global audience. Since then, Gates has been traveling, performing, and connecting with fans from all over. Now he’s on the cusp of his first world tour, with dates across Asia and Europe.

    Local legend Stan Atkinson, known for being a longtime news anchor from the late 1950s to 1999, died this weekend at 92 years old. Atkinson joined KCRA in 1957 when it was just starting out and retired from KOVR, now known as CBS13, in 1999. He is survived by his wife, four children, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Beyond defining local news in the region, he was an Army veteran who dedicated decades of community service raising millions for Sacramento charities and organizations.

Last year, tourism spending in the state reached a record-high of $157.3 billion, up 3% from another record-breaking year in 2023. However, this year has seen a drop in international visitors, particularly from Canada — one of California’s largest markets.

    On April 30, 1975, the Vietnam War ended after North Vietnamese forces captured the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon. In the final stages of the conflict, the United States evacuated thousands of Vietnamese orphans, some of whom were born to foreign servicemen, during Operation Babylift. The children aboard these flights were adopted by families in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, while others remained behind.
