Search operation after man falls off yacht into Irish Sea

The Coast Guard is currently coordinating a search for a man who fell overboard in the Irish sea. The man, who was on a UK-registered yacht, was last seen about 30 km off the coast of Dunmore East, Co Waterford. A 999 call was received last night from the yacht requesting assistance.

An investigation has been launched following the discovery of the body of a man in Co Donegal on Sunday afternoon. Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident on Harbour View Drive, Killybegs, at around 12.20pm. The man, aged in his 60s, was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead a short time later. His body remains at the scene, which is currently preserved for gardaí to carry out a technical examination.

SMEs lost €17m to email scams in last two years

Over €17m has been lost by small and medium Irish businesses over the past two years through email-related scams. That’s according to new findings from FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by the Banking & Payments Federation (BPFI). Some 68% of SMEs have been targeted by a scam in the last 12 months. However, 31% of SMEs said they did not have specific fraud awareness guidelines as well as training programmes in place.

Gardaí are currently at the scene of a four-vehicle collision on the N25 in Co Cork. Emergency services are at the scene of the collision which involves three trucks and a car. It occurred at Ballyhobert, Youghal at around 6.55am. A number of injuries have been reported. The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí have released a CCTV image of a missing Kerry man as they renewed an appeal for help to find him. Michael Gaine, 56, was first reported missing from his home near Kenmare, Co Kerry on Friday, March 21. He was last seen in Kenmare town shortly before 10 am on Thursday, March 20. Michael, who also goes by Mike, bought phone credit in Centra, Kenmare at 9.48am. Gardaí have released a CCTV image of Michael in the shop.
Rising cost of living pushes more Irish households into poverty, CSO figures reveal

The number of people who were at risk of poverty increased in 2024 to 11.7%, according to the latest figures. This was up by 1.1% when compared to 2023, but was below the 12.5% rate in 2022. The latest report from the Central Statistics Office on income and living conditions illustrates the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis. It also reveals that if cost of living measures were excluded from income, the risk of poverty rate would increase to 14.1%.

Pedestrian, 50s, dies after being struck by bus in Co Galway

A man has died following a collision involving a bus in Co Galway on Friday afternoon. The incident involving a bus and a pedestrian happened on the N83 at Claregalway at around 2.10pm. The pedestrian, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed for gardaí to carry out a technical examination of the scene. The road has since been reopened. Investigating gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
More than 6,700 apply to join the gardaí in latest recruitment drive

More 6,700 people have applied to become part of the Garda force as part of the latest recruitment competition. Some 32% of those who applied were women, and 42% were either aged 30 or over. Additionally, 23% of those who applied were of a non-White Irish background. The €375,000 promotional campaign went live across television and national and local media under the tagline "It's a Job Worth Doing" for three weeks.
