Among the gray tombstones weathered by wind, rain, and time in the historic North Cemetery of Portsmouth, N.H., there now stands a new and gleaming marker to commemorate the life of a trailblazing Black woman who was born into slavery and fought for its abolition. The headstone for Dinah Chase Whipple, who was 86 years old when she died in 1846, was unveiled last week in a ceremony as part of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire’s lineup of Juneteenth events, which celebrate emancipation.
