If you can read this, you’re probably old enough to remember when sports fans in Oakland and the East Bay had three proud championship professional franchises sports to claim as their own. As of today, there are zero. The Athletics, Oakland’s final namesake in major U.S. pro sports, walked off the Coliseum field for the final time, even as many of the 46,889 fans in attendance couldn’t quite bring themselves to leave.

Hayden Birdsong‘s final start of his rookie campaign was a trying effort, as the San Francisco Giants fell short to the St. Louis Cardinals with a 6-1 loss to close out the regular season at Oracle Park Sunday afternoon. San Francisco finished with a record of 80-82, the third-straight season without a playoff berth. With just one postseason appearance in eight years, the Giants organization continues a run generated from pure mediocrity.

Chances are that Muni passengers over the last 18 months have ridden on a 40-foot battery-electric bus in San Francisco on routes such as the 9-San Bruno or 44-O’Shaughnessy.
