Mason, who was absent from Commission meetings for several months last year following back surgery, said that he felt a calling to step down and that his job on the Commission “had been done.”Mason, who was serving his third term as the District 4 Commissioner, had about 18 months left in his current term.

    Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced that he has ordered the names of seven military installations changed – including Augusta’s own Fort Eisenhower. For those with a very short memory, the Fort Eisenhower moniker was adopted in 2023. Prior to that, it operated as Fort Gordon, its name honoring Confederate General and former Georgia Governor John Brown Gordon.

    We started revving the engines on what would become Augusta Today about a year ago. Initially, with some degree of seriousness and a dash of mischief, I saddled this little-publication-that-couldwith the not-all-that-innocuous tag ‘Free and Easy.’ To my surprise, and joy, it sort of stuck. I liked that it succinctly described the ethos behind Augusta Today – a free publication that is easy to access and digest – as well as sounding ever-so-slightly naughty. Free and Easy felt...well, easy.

    Representatives from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Gino Brantley, met with downtown residents and business owners on Thursday, May 29 to discuss problems, perceptions, and possible solutions in terms of crime in the downtown area. Sheriff Brantley opened the meeting with a state-of-the-streets address, detailing some of the initiatives taken since he took office in January.
