After striving for recognition and ultimately gaining it as the greatest woman painter of the Baroque era, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656) fell into relative obscurity after her death until scholars and curators resuscitated her reputation in the mid-20th century. Novelists and filmmakers joined the cause, drawn to her story in part because of a 1612 trial of a fellow painter who raped Artemsia when she was 17.
