Former principal engineer Alan Johnstone says he has been handed drawings which show the idea of a replacement crossing was first considered in the 1970s. A retired civil engineer claims the council knew Kirkcudbright Bridge needed replaced more than half a century ago. The local authority was forced to close the bridge in March after a report from a team of engineering experts revealed concerns about the near-century old structure.
