A linguistics expert has backed football boss Gary Caldwell after he complained he is being unfairly treated by English referees because of his Scottish accent. The ex-Scotland and Celtic star is now manager of English League One club Exeter City and blamed his "aggressive" accent for getting him sent off in a match last month.

Tunnock's Teacakes have been passed fit to fly by the RAF after they were controversially banned from flights 60 years ago. The iconic Scottish snack was a favourite of airmen to help stave off hunger while flying their nuclear bombers on long training missions at the height of the Cold War. However, they were added to the RAF's no-fly list following an incident in the 1960s when some teacakes are said to have exploded in a cockpit.
