MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – Nearly 100,000 Wisconsin students could be affected by a federal proposal to the student loan system. The proposed legislation would make changes to repayment plans and cut the Pell Grant program – a program that provides financial aid to low-income students. The initiative would also limit graduate student borrowing at $100,000. Over 95,000 students received Pell Grants in 2024, and half of University of Wisconsin students benefitted from federal aid.

Wisconsin Republicans are proposing an expansion of early voting, with new requirements for municipalities statewide, but some local officials say the one-size-fits-all mandate wouldn’t make sense for Wisconsin’s smallest communities. The proposal would require every municipality in Wisconsin, regardless of its size, to offer at least 20 hours of in-person absentee voting at the clerk’s office, or an alternative site, for each election.

MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – The Joint Finance Committee voted to update public programs and retain certain positions in government offices Thursday. The committee moved forward with proposed updates to the public employee pension system and agreed to continue funding for youth firefighter programs. They also voted to maintain five call center positions at the Department of Safety and Professional Services for an additional three years.

Over 170 wildfires are blazing and burning in Canada, only about half are controlled. The country raised its National Preparedness Level to 5 out of 5 on Thursday June 29. The largest evacuation in living memory is now underway in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where a combined almost 870,000 acres has burned and threatens towns.
