Milestones in the history of the railway will see both national and West Norfolk celebrations this year. Nationally, 2025 is the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington railway in 1825, the first passenger railway in this country and the world but this year is also the 50th anniversary of the re-opening of Watlington station and the 40th anniversary of a group which fought to safeguard the station’s future.

Residents in the Walpole and West Walton areas are being advised of a series of abnormal loads due to make their way through the villages this week and next. The first is due to travel between Sutton Bridge and Walpole on Sunday, May 18, with load movements expected between 4am to 11pm. This will be followed by another series of heavy loads on Thursday, May 22, expected during the same hours. During these times residents and visitors have been asked not to park on the village roads.

Hunstanton Town Council’s events team was proud to host a “vibrant and heartfelt four-day celebration bringing the community together to honour the legacy of those who helped shape the freedom we enjoy today”. The VE Day flag was raised at the war memorial, assisted by the head boy and girl from the town’s primary and Smithdon high schools. On Friday, care homes, carers, volunteers and vulnerable residents enjoyed a special fish and chips luncheon at the town hall.

The North Wootton community came together to party like it was 1945 on Saturday at the village hall’s VE Day 80th Anniversary Celebration. Events kicked off with a scarecrow trail competition where residents created and displayed Victory in Europe-themed scarecrows and more than 700 votes were cast to find the winners. On VE Day, a flag was raised in front of the hall and the VE Day Proclamation was read by committee chairperson, Dennis Blackmore. There was also beacon lighting in the evening.

Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital held a Dementia Fair yesterday, Friday, for those living with dementia, their carers, families and supporters. The event brought together healthcare professionals, community services and organisations to provide expert advice and practical support. Special guest was Kathryn Buscall, a deputy Lieutenant for Norfolk.
