Crest Hardware is closing. What started as a rumor on r/Williamsburg and local group chats late last month was confirmed on Monday with a letter sent out to customers from owner Joseph Franquinha: “It’s with a heavy heart we write to inform you Crest Hardware and Urban Garden Center is closing its doors after 62 years.” Franquinha’s father, Manny, opened the store at 558 Metropolitan Avenue with his brother Joe, in 1962.

This morning New Yorkers across the city felt their buildings shaking. The first reaction was disbelief. And then, denial. But then it was confirmed by the U.S. Geological Service: at 10:23 a.m., a 4.8-magnitude earthquake originating in Lebanon, New Jersey, had indeed occurred. It was felt as far as Philadelphia and Boston. The effects of the quake are still being assessed. In the moments after the quake, New Yorkers jumped on their phones and started texting and tweeting about it.

There were threats of flash floods across the city on Friday; cars drove through small rivers, and JFK had already reported three inches by mid-morning. “We urge New Yorkers to prepare for heavy rain and potential flooding throughout Friday and Saturday morning,” NYC Emergency Management commissioner Zach Iscol said Thursday night. (Meanwhile, flash-flood phone alerts went off long after most people had already left for work and school.) The MTA warned of “major disruptions,” and they were right.
