For years, this magazine would devote an issue to exploring the Hamptons. In 1972, Gail Sheehy paid a visit to Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith “Little Edie,” Jackie O.’s unhinged and downwardly mobile relations who were living in the magnificent, yet borderline unlivable, estate Grey Gardens. (The article inspired the documentary.) By the time we returned for our last stand-alone issue in 2000, the Hamptons had transformed.

The Sub-Living Room The masks are gifts from friends or made by “avid mask-maker” James McGann. “For years, he sold masks under the handle ‘maskbread,’ ” says Madison Berg. She made the organ pillows, and McGann helped sew them. The duck lamp and easy chair were reclaimed. Madison berg and James McGann try not to buy anything new. They drove hours upstate to pick up a living-room couch they found on Craigslist.

The Living-Room Wall The faux fireplace is areclaimed Edwardian-art nouveau cast-iron combination fireplace. The painting above, “Portrait of a Boy,” is by Gustavo Montoya and the light is a Petite Tulle Wall Lampby Blueprint Lighting. The black-and-white-print Conchula swivel chair, upholstered in Dedar, is by Greenapple. About a year and a half ago, the designer Juan Carretero found a 750-square-foot Sheetrock box of an apartment in the former General Electric factory on Bank Street.

The Living Room “Art needs to be lived with,” says Kenny Schachter. “Every day, something gets moved around.” The works on the walls are his, other than the green painting above the blue couch by his son, Adrian.
