The packed townhouse of a downtown art-scene refugee. The Living Room “Art needs to be lived with,” says Kenny Schachter. “Every day, something gets moved around.” The works on the walls are his, other than the green painting above the blue couch by his son, Adrian. The center sofa is Ole Wanscher, the yellow sofa is Zaha Hadid, and the blue sofa and chairs are Franco Albini. The Living Room “Art needs to be lived with,” says Kenny Schachter.

The Kitchen and Library On the far wall (left), custom cabinetry with nearly 18-foot-high millwork provides storage on a grand scale. The bookshelves are by Vitsoe. Maxwell Neely-Cohen always wanted to live in an apartment big enough to double as a performance space for himself and his friends. The living room. The swivel chair is from Design Within Reach. The base was broken,so Shawn Patrick Anderson welded it back together himself. “ThenI threw on this red fur to spice it up,” he says. He found the resin table at Chelsea Flea Market and the rugs at ABC Carpet & Home and Craigslist. Shawn Patrick Anderson is a professional collector of stuff. Most of it is stored at Acme Brooklyn, the prop house he co-owns that lends objects and furniture to TV shows, film, and photo shoots.

Nearly 40 years ago, Claude-Noëlle Toly noticed an ad for a third-floor walk-up in the window of a real-estate office in Greenwich Village. The initial listing wasn’t promising. The 275-square-foot studio had beat-up wooden floors and small windows, and what passed for a fireplace was a hole in the wall. There was no kitchen. Such a place used to be called a “handyman special.” No glamour; just nuts and bolts.

In the 1980s, graphic and furniture designer Dan Friedman began living what he called “a double life.” A pioneer of postmodernism, he’d become a regular among downtown galleries and clubs; his friends included such artists as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf and photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. But by day, he consulted with corporate clients; for around 20 years of his life, he lived not in a bohemian Soho loft but on Fifth Avenue in a classic white-brick West Village co-op.
